Things you need to know about clubfoot
Clubfoot
refers to a condition in which a newborn's foot or feet appear to be twisted
out of shape or position. This tern is used to describe a range of foot
deformities in children, usually present at birth. Caregivers of C has
seen many kids with a distorted foot. Mostly it has twisted downward or inward
and the arch is increased and the heel is turned inward.
Symptoms:
In
an infant born with clubfoot, you may see the following symptoms:
- The top of the foot
twists downwards or inwards
- The arch is more pronounced
and the heel turns inward
- In severe cases, the foot
may look as if it is upside down
- The calf muscles tend to
be underdeveloped
- If only one foot is
affected, it is usually slightly shorter than the other, especially at the
heel.
Risk factors related to clubfoot:
- Males are twice as likely
as females to be born with clubfoot
- If a parent has clubfoot,
the high possibility is that they will have children with the same
condition.
Why children born with clubfoot?
Clubfoot
is mainly idiopathic, which means the cause of this foot deformity is unknown.
Genetic factors may play a major role and some specific gene changes may have
been associated with it. In most of the cases, it appears to be passed down
through families.
Mothers,
please know that it is not caused by the fetus’s position in the uterus. But
sometime it may be linked to skeletal abnormalities at the birth of the kids.
It can also happen due to a disruption in a neuromuscular pathway, possibly in
the brain, the spinal cord, a nerve, or a muscle.
According
to the team of Child Care Brea CA, environmental factors, maternal age, and clubfoot can
have a connection with each other. Moreover, if the mother has diabetes and the
habit of smoking a child may be born with such foot deformities.
Treatment:
Treatments
are available for clubfoot once the child is born. Though clubfoot will not
improve without treatment, the main objective of the whole process would be to
render the feet functional and free of pain.
