How to Time Out Your Child Successfully

To regulate the child’s behavior, many parents prefer time out which a great way to diffuse the emotional situation and manage his/her own frustration. It is a great way to make it clear to the child that this type of behavior is not acceptable. It has been seen that many kids after attending the Montessori Hacienda HeightsCA show the behavioral problem in the peer group. The teachers must make the parents aware of certain incidents so that they can take possible measures at home.
If you are a parent and want to try the time out to your kids, then here is the guideline to make it successful and effective.
  • Warning: To understand the consequences of some particular behavior, they need to be warned. When they know that bad behavior like disobeying your instruction or hitting someone can lead to the time out, they may restrict themselves in the warning stage.
  • Place: For the time out the purpose, you have to select a special chair or a special place like the stair. It will also help the kids to stay aware of the consequences. You can also name the chair or place like a mischievous chair or something like that. Time out is a good way to teach the kids without punishing.
  • Quick response: Whenever the kid misbehaves you should not wait and schedule the time out for a later session. You have to make a quick response to the behavior without making a big explanation. You have to just state the reason and ask the kid to go to time out. You have to be very specific, quick, brief and unemotional. In this way, the child will get to know that this behavior will lead to the consequences of time out. If you schedule the session for the later, then it may be ineffective as the child may forget the reason meanwhile.
  • Calm down: The main purpose of the time out session is to make the child sit quietly so that he or she can manage the frustration or anger. In that situation, if you show your anger, the purpose will not be served. The kids need to be completely quiet for the duration. In this way, they can associate good behavior with the time out and follow it to avoid it.
